The 32-year record-high surface melt in 2019/2020 on the northern George VI Ice Shelf, Antarctic Peninsula

چکیده

Abstract. In the 2019/2020 austral summer, surface melt duration and extent on northern George VI Ice Shelf (GVIIS) was exceptional compared to 31 previous summers of distinctly lower melt. This finding is based analysis near-continuous 41-year satellite microwave radiometer scatterometer data, which are sensitive meltwater ice shelf in near-surface snow. Using optical imagery from Landsat 8 (2013 2020) Sentinel-2 (2017 2020), record volumes ponding were also observed GVIIS 2019/2020, with 23 % area covered by 0.62 km3 ponded 19 January. These conditions driven sustained air temperatures ?0 ?C for anomalously long periods (55 90 h) late November onwards, limited refreezing. The warm likely warm, low-speed (?7.5 m s?1) northwesterly northeasterly winds not foehn wind conditions, only present 9 h total season. Increased shelves may threaten their stability through increased potential hydrofracture initiation; a risk that increase due firn content depletion response melting.

Exposure-age record of Holocene ice sheet and ice shelf change in the northeast Antarctic Peninsula

This paper describes glacialegeologic observations and cosmogenic-nuclide exposure ages from ice-free areas adjacent to the Sjögren, Boydell, and Drygalski Glaciers of the northeast Antarctic Peninsula. These provide a record of Holocene glacier and ice shelf change in this region. Early Holocene ice surface elevation near the present coastline was locally at least 500 m above present sea level...

Present stability of the Larsen C ice shelf, Antarctic Peninsula

We modelled the flow of the Larsen C and northernmost Larsen D ice shelves, Antarctic Peninsula, using a model of continuum mechanics of ice flow, and applied a fracture criterion to the simulated velocities to investigate the ice shelf’s present-day stability. Constraints come from satellite data and geophysical measurements from the 2008/09 austral summer. Ice-shelf thickness was derived from...

Accelerated ice discharge from the Antarctic Peninsula following the collapse of Larsen B ice shelf

[1] Interferometric synthetic-aperture radar data collected by ERS-1/2 and Radarsat-1 satellites show that Antarctic Peninsula glaciers sped up significantly following the collapse of Larsen B ice shelf in 2002. Hektoria, Green and Evans glaciers accelerated eightfold between 2000 and 2003 and decelerated moderately in 2003. Jorum and Crane glaciers accelerated twofold in early 2003 and threefo...

Important role for ocean warming and increased ice-shelf melt in Antarctic sea-ice expansion

Changes in sea ice significantly modulate climate change because of its high reflective and strong insulating nature. In contrast to Arctic sea ice, sea ice surrounding Antarctica has expanded1, with record extent2 in 2010. This ice expansion has previously been attributed to dynamical atmospheric changes that induce atmospheric cooling3. Here we show that accelerated basal melting of Antarctic...
